At Hauxton Primary School, we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. We believe that an innovative, varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children. Our children have a minimum of 2 hours PE teaching per week as part of their curriculum entitlement and many of our children are active members of sports clubs and activities provided by our school and the wider community.
Our Primary School Sport’s Funding enables us to extend our provision through employing additional sports professionals, entering into more competitive sports competitions and training our staff to deliver in-house quality PE sessions.
Primary School Sports Funding
The Government provides all schools in England with a Sports Premium grant. The rationale behind this was to ensure that there is an Olympic legacy for sport in England. The grant has been given to schools to enhance the provision of sport and PE and comes with certain guidelines about how this money can be spent. This academic year, we have been given £16,870 to spend. Schools have been given the choice of how the money is spent, as each school setting has their own particular needs and areas on which they need to focus.
What is the Sports Premium?
The PE and Sport Premium provides ring fenced money to primary school headteachers to make additional and sustained improvements to the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils.
Our Vision
All pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport
Our Objective
To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools. We would expect indicators of such improvement to include:
- the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles
- the profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
- increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- increased participation in competitive sport
What support does the school get from this funding?
- opportunities to ensure that our PE leader is up to date with PE and sport;
- access to quality staff CPD in sport and PE;
- the opportunity to take part in cluster competitions and events related to sport and PE;
- Bikeability courses for pupils in Year 4 and 6.
What impact has this funding had at Hauxton Primary School?
- Our teaching and delivery of PE across all year groups is supported by our PE subject lead, Mrs Michelle Cooke.
- Professional development for our staff in PE and sports has improved the consistency of lessons across the curriculum.
- As a school, we are already seeing the positive impact of the money spent in this area.
- Our pupils have seen success in cluster sports festivals and inter school sports events and we know our children derive enormous benefit and sporting friendship opportunities from these activities.
- We train pupils as Young Sports Leaders who support play at lunchtimes.
- Some of the money from the Sports Premium grant has been used to transport our children to and from venues in order to allow us greater access to sporting events throughout the year.
There are a whole range of educational, health and wellbeing benefits from delivering high quality PE and school sport and we see on a regular basis that when sport is delivered well it can transform the lives of a whole range of pupils.
We are delighted that this money has been given to schools and feel that we are giving our children the best possible chance to access sport and PE. Without this grant many of our sports and events would not happen as our budgets are reducing in real terms each year.
